Chapter Eleven

Melena resisted the urge to hurl the phone. Of all the unmitigated gall! Before she could finish berating Garrett in her mind, much less speak the words aloud, her phone rang. His name flashed on caller ID. She declined the call. Minutes later, the phone jangled again. She ignored this call and the next. An hour after the third call, she checked her messages. Butterflies bounced off her ribcage when she listened to his voice...

“Melena, I know you’ve got this damn phone with you.”

Little remorse here. She hit delete.

The next message heaved a sigh through the air. “Mel, don’t make me apologize by voice mail.”

“You don’t know me well enough to call me Mel,” she muttered. She hit delete again and waited for the next message.

A vile curse greeted her ear. “Fine, give me the silent treatment. I thought we were way past the games teenagers play.”

Melena barely had time to process the tug of anger at his tone, followed by remorse because he was right, when a text message came through.

“All right, have it your way. I’m sorry. I was out of line. Please call so I can apologize in person.”

Much better. She smiled and hit the redial button.

“Apology accepted,” she interjected before he could say more than her name.

“I have no right to tell you how to grieve and I’m sorry I was short with you, but you need to do what’s best for you. Everyone else should respect your feelings as much as you do theirs.”

Truth rang with startling clarity in his words. Melena blinked fast, swallowed hard and sighed. “I know, but it’s so difficult to know what the right thing to do is. I’ve always been here for my children and now, with the grandkids...”

Her voice trembled. She cleared her throat. “I mentioned going back to the ranch and my mother thinks I’m just running away.”

“So, what’s wrong with running away, or more aptly, running to something? Your children will learn to respect you more if you stand up for what you believe is best for your healing. Besides, you can always go back.”

“That’s a long trip for a short visit.”

This time it was Garrett’s turn to sigh. “You’re right. Well, get back as soon as you feel comfortable, and call anytime. I promise I won’t bite your head off next time.”

She heard the smile in his voice and envisioned the dimple in his cheek and those deep, azure eyes sparkling with mirth. Her lips curved in response. “Thank you.”

They chatted a little longer, then hung up.

Melena put the phone in her pocket and pressed a hand against the thundering in her chest. She turned and caught a glimpse of Jon smiling at her from her favorite photograph. Everything within her spiraled as the voice of guilt rose to taunt.

Hasn’t even been a year yet...

She grabbed the picture and sank onto her bed. Fresh sobs wracked her frame until she fell into an exhausted slumber and dreamt...

They danced. Jon held her close as they glided across the floor.
